The photographs are primarily of Loran (long range navigation station) stations during the 1940s and early 1950s. Places include Umnak, Naknek, Cold Bay, Annette Island, Cordova, Yakutat, Gustavus, and Sitka.

Photographs used by Western Airlines to promote travel to Alaska. Included are airplanes, from the 1920’s to the ‘60’s, communities and towns around Southeast Alaska, totem poles and carving, boats, ships, mining. An aerial view of the old Douglas Island bridge is included.

Many of the photographs in this collection were taken by Roy Wheat when he was stationed in Alaska during WWI. The images are of Nome and Interior Alaska; the date range is 1917-1940s. Most of the photographs are carefully identified. There are also photographs of Captain Roald Amundsen, Norwegian explorer (1920), when he came through Nome.

White's, from his service on the Steamer THOMAS CORWIN, which covers lifesaving station management in California, Oregon and Washington.The James T. White papers consist of records and journals kept from 1900-1902, while he served as surgeon and quarantine officer on the U.S.S. NUNIVAK. The papers describe life at St. Michael and include a descriptive account of the cruise in 1900 up the Yukon River to the winter...

Content Description

Many of the views in this collection were used to illustrate Sam White’s story of his work in Alaska; serialized in the ALASKA SPORTSMAN magazine from December 1964 through November 1965. Most depict airplanes and villages in interior Alaska. Subjects include Alaska Game Commission personnel and offices, airplane crashes, the Wien brothers (Merrill, Sig and Noel), and localities, such as Ft. Yukon and Tonzana.

Letter includes comments on personal contacts with: Jack Dalton, J.M. "Si" Tanner, Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith, Frank Reid, and Michael Heney; eye witness account of the Smith-Reid duel and stopping the strike mob on the White Pass and Yukon Railway.
